Hyperhidrosis treatments
Hyperhidrosis refers to excessive sweating that can affect different areas of the body and have a significant impact on quality of life.

What is hyperhidrosis?
Hyperhidrosis is a condition characterized by excessive sweating, with no direct link to outside temperature or physical activity.
It affects approximately 3% of the population, men and women combined.
Despite its frequency, this condition often remains underdiagnosed, because many people are unaware that there are effective solutions to treat it.
Excessive sweating can cause significant discomfort in everyday life, both socially and professionally.
What areas may be affected?
Hyperhidrosis can affect various areas of the body, including:
- armpits
- the palms of the hands
- the soles of the feet
- the forehead
Depending on the case, perspiration can be localized to a single area or concern several regions of the body.
What are the causes?
There are generally two forms of hyperhidrosis:
Essential hyperhidrosis
It is the most common form. It occurs without an identifiable medical cause and often affects specific areas of the body.
Secondary hyperhidrosis
Rarer, it may be linked to an underlying pathology, in particular of neurological, endocrine or metabolic origin.
One medical opinion makes it possible to determine the origin of excessive sweating and to guide the most appropriate treatment.
What treatments are possible?
Several solutions can be proposed depending on the intensity of perspiration and the areas concerned.
Local antiperspirants
Products containing aluminum salts help to temporarily block sweat glands. They are available in the form of a spray, stick or lotion in pharmacies. Their effectiveness may vary and some sensitive skin may experience irritation.
Botulinum toxin injections
This treatment is particularly effective for underarm hyperhidrosis. The injections make it possible to reduce perspiration by about 70-80% on average.
The treatment is performed in the office, with mild local anesthesia if necessary, and is effective for 4 to 6 months.
This treatment is not offered for hands and feet.
Other treatments
Iontophoresis is a treatment used for hyperhidrosis of the hands and feet. It is not offered within our structure. If necessary, we can refer you to the HUG dermatology department in order to carry out an initial series of approximately 10 test sessions.
