Warts and molluscums: two benign viral skin conditions

Some skin conditions are caused by viruses that are very common but perfectly benign. The two most common are Warts and Molluscum contagiosum.
These lesions may be visually impressive, but they generally have no impact on health and often evolve spontaneously over time.
Warts
Warts are small growths on the skin caused by certain viruses in the papillomavirus family.
Although their appearance may be annoying, they are totally benign and can sometimes go unnoticed.
In children, the aggressive treatments used in the past were gradually abandoned, as they could be painful and their effectiveness was not always satisfactory. Today, when necessary, we give priority Simpler approaches that are adapted to the child's age.
There is also a individual susceptibility : some people develop warts easily while others never get them.
Prevention
Even though these viruses are difficult to avoid completely, there are some measures that can limit the risk of transmission:
- wearing sandals or plastic protectors around the pools
- use protectors on sports mats or tatami mats
- avoid direct contact with existing warts
It is important to note that these viruses are very resistant to conventional disinfection, which explains their frequent presence in sports or aquatic environments.
Molluscum contagiosum
Molluscums are also a mild viral skin infection. They appear in the form of small, rounded, pearlescent lesions.
They are especially common in children and seem to appear More and more sooner, probably because of the close contacts linked to collective activities and community life.
In the majority of cases, molluscs disappear spontaneously in 12 to 18 months.
In some children, however, they can cause associated skin reactions, including episodes of eczema around the lesions. In these situations, treatment may be considered.
As with warts, the management is adapted to each child, taking into account his age, his tolerance to care and any associated symptoms.
Molluscum can also appear in adults, although this is still rarer.
A generally spontaneous evolution
In the majority of cases, these two viral conditions heal spontaneously over time.
When treatments are required, they are selected based on:
- the age of the patient
- the number of lesions
- possible discomfort
It is also important to know that laser technologies are not being used to treat these mild viral infections.
